Golf on West Coast

Golf has been played on The Coast for over 100 years and in that time there have been a number of very different and variable condition golf courses established.

With a population of only 32 000 - and 8.... yes that's right - 8 golf courses spread amongst it, you will most certainly be spoilt for choice when you do come to the Coast for a round or two. With a variety of different fairways and courses available - you may want to take a few extra days to "go another round" if not only on the green, perhaps then in one of our many local Hotels and bars.

In the north of The Coast is Karamea, a neat little 9-hole links course that is situated in the sand dunes right on the beach just north of the village. The hospitality here is legend and the couple of tournaments that are played there each year are very popular with Coast golfers. Not long but the sort of tricky holes that can bite you in the 'you-know-what' quickly, especially if the wind is coming off the sea, and it must be said that's not all that unusual.

Hokitika Golf Club has an 18 hole true links course that lies in the sand dunes just south of Hokitika (on the road to The Glaciers, Haast and points south.) Most of the holes run parallel with the beach with the exception of two par threes which play away from the beach.

The course has 3 par fives and 4 par threes for a par of 71 which is for the most part free of trees but has well tended bunkers on most holes for the slightly wayward. A par 72 Hokitika can present itself in a variety of moods, from benign and friendly on fine, windless days to harsh and unforgiving when the wind blows up or down The Coast.

While the greens putt very well visitors will find reading some of the breaks a real challenge with a number of the greens having quite severe right-to-left slopes. The 14th green is a very large green that shares as the practice putting green but has the added hazard of a bunker in it. Good idea NOT to play to the right on your approach!!

One true reward of playing Hokitika is the view of the majestic Southern Alps, in particular Aorangi, Mount Cook and Mount Tasman, clearly seen down several fairways on any of the beautifully fine days The Coast is famous for.
